Your company data is important. Its probably taken a long
time to prepare & would cause your business serious
problems if you lose it.
Its essential in business to have contingency plans, insurers
usually insist on these for computers, and a major part of
these plans involve having adequate backups.
Until recently, backups were usually onto tapes. Recently the
price/capapacity ratio of tapes has seen them become more
expensive for the larger hard disks of today as servers & pcs
storage capacity has rocketed.
We now recommend that even if you have a tape backup
you also need a secondary form of backup to improve your
chances of quickly restoring your business in the event of
disaster. The two methods that we recommend are offsite
backup & external hard disks.
bear IT now offer to our customers a new offline secure
backup service. Offline backup consists of backing up over
the internet, usually overnight when your network isn't in
use, and is stored safely & securely on servers away from
your premises. You choose what you want to backup.
External hard disks are about the size of a hardback book.
These plug into your server & can be scheduled to backup
overnight. They usually have a relatively large capacity so
an ideal solution is to have two, with one stored offsite &
swap them daily. They are also relatively inexpensive & are
useful for backing up for almost anybody.
Remember the cost of losing data is high - data recovery can
cost up to £1600 at 2007 prices in the event of hardware
failure.
